The Organizational Challenge

The UNDP created its Accelerator Labs as decentralized, agile teams capable of testing local solutions to urgent development challenges. Over time, limited funding, bureaucratic constraints, and weak private-sector incentives reduced their ability to innovate and scale impact.

The Strategic Response

Operate the Labs through a more business-oriented model that aligns profitability with sustainable impact and attracts scalable partnerships.

The final recommendation connected organizational reform with market incentives

My Contribution

I participated in every stakeholder interview and helped identify and contact Accelerator Lab employees and sustainable-development experts. I led the organizational-structure analysis, examining how bureaucracy, limited autonomy, and weak institutional support constrained innovation. That analysis helped shape the team’s business-oriented operating model.

Research
Analyzed the Labs’ organizational structure, funding constraints, autonomy, and level of institutional support.

Engage
Participated in every stakeholder interview and helped contact Accelerator Lab employees and external experts.

De-Risk
Connected the organizational findings to a business-oriented operating model designed to improve scalability.

Diagnosing Structural Inertia

Interview evidence showed that the Labs’ original agility was being absorbed by the UNDP’s centralized, risk-averse structure. The Labs lacked the autonomy, resources, and market incentives needed to scale promising solutions.

The team translated those findings into an operating model that pairs local experimentation with private investment, clear incentives, and measurable sustainable impact.
